Temperature increase data centres PDC1 & PDC2

From June 2025, we will gradually increase the temperature in our data centres PDC1 and PDC2 to 27 degrees Celsius. This adjustment will enable smarter and more efficient cooling, with more use of free cooling. As a result, our data centres operate more energy-efficient and sustainable. In addition, this measure is necessary to comply with legal obligations, as laid down in the Approved Measures Lists (EML).

1. Why do you raise the temperature in PDC1 and PDC2?

We raise the temperature in order to use cooling more efficiently and sustainably. By gradually increasing the cooling temperature, we can use free cooling more often. This reduces energy consumption and contributes to our sustainability goals. The data centres in Brabant (PDC3 and PDC4) already operate with a temperature of 27 degrees.

2. What temperature will be increased to?

The temperature will be gradually increased to 27 degrees Celsius. The increase will be gradual, at 1 degree per step.

3. What does this mean for the SLA?

The following values are used:

  • Chiller outlet temperature: 27°C ±10%
  • Humidity: 30% - 70%.

4. Will the increased temperature affect my equipment in the data centre, and what should I watch out for?

The increased temperature in data centres remains within the recommended operating margins of modern IT equipment. In most cases, no action is needed. However, it is wise to check whether your equipment is suitable for these conditions. Pay attention to general guidelines such as good airflow in your racks and up-to-date monitoring of temperature readings. Do you have older or sensitive equipment, or specific requirements from your organisation? Then contact our support department so that together we can look for a suitable solution.

5. What is the EML and what does it have to do with this measure?

The Approved Measures List (EML) is a list of energy-saving measures required by the government for companies, including data centres. Increasing the cooling temperature is one of the recognised measures. By making this adjustment, we comply with the legal energy-saving obligation. See also https://www.rvo.nl/energiemaat....

6. How will the higher temperature affect operations in the data centre?

The temperature in the data rooms will rise as a result of the higher outlet temperature at the chillers. Temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius are to be expected, especially on hot days. We recommend taking this into account when you need to carry out work in the hall. Do not stay unnecessarily long in the ward. Take regular breaks and drink plenty of water.

7. What if I have questions or technical concerns?
