The webshop as a magnet

Wijdeman Schoenen' digital subsidiary is now making a substantial contribution to sales. Moreover, in 2013, the webshop was awarded the Thuiswinkel Award for the best shoe site for the third time in a row. This public award was presented on 7 March 2013 by presenter Eddy Zoëy to Ernst Wijdeman, who took over the business from his father Marcel in 2004 as the sixth generation of Wijdeman. According to Ernst Wijdeman, the success is due to a conscious working method: "Although it is about online sales, we approach it the same way as in regular shops: remaining honest and solving any mistakes quickly and neatly. The range and image of the webshop also attracts people from much further outside Alkmaar to our brick-and-mortar shops, so it pays off in that sense too."

The secret of success

Development and realisation of Wijdeman Schoenen' webshop have been in the hands of Factif from the start. Eddie Smeink of Factif explains that it was a first for his company at the time: "We experienced organic growth with Wijdeman. For us, this webshop was the start of our current specialism, in which we are incidentally broadening our scope: in addition to webshops for shoes, we are increasingly focusing on other industries." How does Eddie explain the success of Wijdeman's webshop? "That is of course partly due to a strong technical concept and good hosting. We also help think about strategy. But the commercial part Ernst Wijdeman does all by himself. And so he does that well; as a relatively small player, he really keeps up with the big ones in terms of turnover." Wijdeman's webshop used to be hosted by another party: "But on our advice, they switched to Previder a few years back. They also really stood at the cradle of the shop as it is today."

Switching to Previder

Ernst Wijdeman recalls what was the concrete reason for switching hosting partners: "We were working with a shared environment that occasionally caused performance problems. With a webshop, you obviously can't have that at all. That's why I asked Factif to find a party that was better at it. They then came up with Previder, and that turned out well. We just switched to a new dedicated server. That has been a project in which our ambitions have been realised well and at an acceptable cost. Both Factif and Previder are “normal” people, honest and easily accessible. And when necessary, they take action right away."

Leading the way

The origins of the webshop lie in a digital shop window that had been realised years ago on the internet, Ernst Wijdeman explains: "Customers liked it, but they also wanted an opportunity to buy what they saw. Then we very cautiously started selling online, with part of the range. We are now working on a development with which we are quite ahead in our industry: a dedicated tablet webshop."

Super party

Eddie Smeink is also very pleased with Previder: "We have been working with Previder for 5 years now and I think they are a super party to work with. They do what they promise, respond quickly and think along with us. For some time now, we have had our own server in Previder's data centre on which we host our customers. We did have some problems with that from time to time, to be honest. But Previder has always solved it just fine, all credits to them."
