Previder deploys full force on sustainable energy management for servers in data centres

As part of the Dutch Data Center Association (DDA), Previder is working with other data centres to make the sector more sustainable. An important step in this is the implementation of the energy-saving measures from the Approved Measures List (EML), which helps data centres optimise their energy consumption and meet legal requirements. One of the measures that requires extra attention is the FI2 measure, which prescribes automated energy management of servers.

The FI2 measure focuses on optimising energy management on servers, but this presents a challenge: the servers in data centres are often owned by the customers, not by the data centre itself. This means that the data centre depends on the customer's willingness and cooperation to implement this measure. Previder, as a committed and sustainable data centre, helps customers understand and implement these complex measures so that we can work together to manage their IT environment more energy-efficiently.

What is the Approved Measures List (EML) again?

The Approved Measures List (EML) contains energy-saving obligations for companies that consume more than 50,000 kWh of electricity or 25,000 m³ of natural gas annually. These measures must be recoverable within five years and focus on efficient energy management. For data centres, the list includes several optimisations, such as virtualisation of servers, automated energy management, and energy-efficient cooling systems, all aimed at reducing energy consumption and costs.

A new working method for energy management

To support the implementation of the FI2 measure, a new working method has been developed: “Energy management for servers in data centres”. This working method provides clarity to both data centres and their customers on how to comply with FI2 requirements. Pieter de Haer, Portfolio Manager at Previder explains:

‘The aim is to strengthen cooperation between data centres and their customers to achieve energy-saving targets.’

In addition, a uniform way of enforcement by environmental services is being worked on so that every data centre complies with the same rules.

Why energy efficiency comes first

‘For Previder, energy efficiency is not only a legal obligation, but also an essential part of our business strategy.’ Says de Haer. "By constantly investing in the latest technologies, such as separating hot and cold air flows and deploying free cooling, we can both reduce operational costs and minimise our ecological footprint. Sustainability is paramount at Previder, and we are proud of our commitment to making the data centre sector more sustainable. Our collaboration within the DDA and our commitment to energy-saving measures such as FI2, help us meet both our customers' needs and the demands of the future."

Efficient future plans

Previder remains actively committed to energy efficiency within data centres. Together with customers and partners, they strive to not only comply with legal obligations, but also contribute to a sustainable and efficient future for the IT sector through initiatives such as the new working method “Energy management for servers in data centres”.
