The NIS2 registration requirement: what you need to know
IT Security

Network & Information Security Directive
The Network and Information Security Directive 2.0 (NIS2) is an important step in strengthening the digital resilience of essential and key services in Europe. This directive requires organisations to register in an entity registry, which helps improve cybersecurity and increase the visibility of digital resilience within the EU. The registration requirement will apply from the entry into force of the Cybersecurity Act (Cbw). This is expected to be in mid-2025. However, from 17 October 2024, the registration functionality is already available on my.ncsc.co.uk. So it is already possible to register now even if your organisation is identified as a significant entity. If you want to know whether your organisation is also covered by the NIS 2, you can check here: https://regelhulpenvoorbedrijven.nl/NIS-2-NL/
How does the NIS2 registration requirement work?
- Identification of entities:
Organisations covered by NIS2 are identified as “essential” or “significant” entities. These are organisations whose failure could have a disruptive impact on the economy and society.
Registration process:
Registration takes place at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in the Netherlands. Organisations must provide data on their network and information systems, as well as contact information for incident response.
The registration functionality is available through the portal my.ncsc.nl, where organisations can log in with eHerkenning or Single Sign-On Rijk.
Preparation:
For smooth registration, it is important to gather all the necessary information in advance. This may require input from various departments within the organisation, such as the CISO, IT security consultant, network administrator or director.
Why is eHerkenning needed?
eHerkenning is a standardised login system for companies and organisations to securely and reliably log in to government services and other organisations. Using eHerkenning for NIS2 registration offers several advantages:
1. Security:
eHerkenning provides a high level of security through strong authentication. This helps protect sensitive information during the registration process.
2. Reliability:
By using eRecognition, organisations can be sure that the right people have access to the registration portal. This prevents unauthorised access and potential security risks.
3. Efficiency:
eHerkenning makes the registration process more efficient by providing a standardised and user-friendly login method. This saves time and reduces administrative burdens.
Conclusion
The NIS2 Directive and its registration obligations are crucial for strengthening the digital resilience of essential and key services in Europe. By using eRecognition, organisations can meet these obligations safely and efficiently, contributing to a more secure digital landscape.
